Former Chiefs coach pushes for Pitso Mosimane appointment

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has called for his former club to sign Pitso Mosimane. Jingles has been without a club since leaving Iran earlier this year. Amakhosi have been linked to the former Al Ahly coach for several years, but no official offer was ever made for Mosimane by Chiefs. With Nasreddine Nabi on his way out of Naturena, Khan has urged Amakhosi to bring in one of the best coaches the country has produced. Khan explains what Pitso Mosimane can bring to Kaizer Chiefs “Pitso Mosimane is a high-profile coach. He’s been there, done that and won the Champions League on more than one occasion. He comes with a huge pedigree, but he also comes with big expectations. Can Chiefs afford to buy him the players he needs? I am not talking about salary,” Khan told Soccer Beat. “Pitso doesn’t want to finish second best; he has a score to settle with Sundowns. Besides being a professional, he wants to prove to South Africa that he is the best coach the country has produced in the last decade or so. Khan said if Kaizer Chiefs want to compete with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, they have to sign Pitso Mosimane. “I don’t think that Chiefs won’t trust him, the reality is can they afford to get him what he wants, firstly and Pitso is a coach that is very firm on what he wants to do. You don’t sign players for Pitso Mosimane. “I would sign Pitso Mosimane at this stage because I want to compete with the likes of Pirates and Sundowns currently because their house is in order,” the ex-Chiefs coach added. With Nabi suspended by the club’s management, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze have taken over until further notice. Can Mosimane solve Amakhosi’s problems this season?
Galatasaray vs Liverpool live: Team news and line-ups as Hugo Ekitike starts Champions League clash

Match stats Galatasaray and Liverpool will meet for a fifth time in European competition, with both sides managing one victory apiece across the previous four (D2). This will be their first game against each other since a 3-2 win for Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League in December 2006. Liverpool are winless in their previous two away trips to face Galatasaray, 1-1 in February 2002 and losing 3-2 in December 2006. The only teams they’ve faced away from home more often in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League without winning are Chelsea (5 – D3 L2) and Napoli (3 – L3). Chris Wilson30 September 2025 19:20 Hugo Ekitike reveals true thoughts on playing alongside Alexander Isak Hugo Ekitike said it is a “good question” of how Liverpool use him and Alexander Isak after spending £200m on new strikers this summer but has insisted they can play together. Manager Arne Slot has preferred to operate with one striker, flanked by two wingers, but Ekitike formed a prolific partnership with Omar Marmoush at Frankfurt in the first half of last season. Chris Wilson30 September 2025 19:10 Team news Arne Slot makes four changes to the side that lost to Palace at the weekend. In defence, Jeremie Frimpong returns at right-back in place of Conor Bradley, while in midfield Curtis Jones comes in for Alexis Mac Allister. Mo Salah is rested in place of Cody Gakpo, while Hugo Ekitike returns from suspension to start in place of Alexander Isak. Chris Wilson30 September 2025 19:00 ‘A star-studded bench for Liverpool’ The latest from Richard Jolly at Rams Park: “A star-studded bench for Liverpool tonight. It was expected Alexander Isak would be on it. The surprise is that Mohamed Salah is, too. Perhaps it is a recognition that Salah needs to be rested more than before and Liverpool do have Chelsea on Saturday. “But it will be interesting to see who plays on the right; presumably Florian Wirtz but possibly Cody Gakpo or even Curtis Jones or Dominik Szoboszlai.” Chris Wilson30 September 2025 18:55 Line-ups Galatasaray XI: Cakir; Singo, Sanchez, Bardakci, Jakobs; Lemina, Torreira, Gundogan; Akgun; Osimhen, Yilmaz. Subs: Gunay, Metehan, Sallai, Sara, Icardi, Sane, Eren, Berkan, Ahmed, Kaan, Yusuf, Arda. Chris Wilson30 September 2025 18:51 Line-ups Liverpool XI: Alisson; Frimpong, Gomez, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Jones, Szoboszlai; Wirtz, Ekitike, Gakpo. Subs: Mamardashvili, Woodman, Gomez, Endo, Isak, Mac Allister, Salah, Bradley, Robertson, Ngumoha. Chris Wilson30 September 2025 18:47 ‘Deafening whistles from the home crowd’ The latest from Richard Jolly at Rams Park: “The Rams Park is still largely unoccupied but when Liverpool emerged for a stroll on the pitch, there were still deafening whistles from the home crowd. “Arne Slot looked unperturbed, but it suggests Liverpool should prepare for something rather louder when the rest of the Galatasaray crowd get here.” Richard Jolly at Rams Park30 September 2025 18:43 Team news The line-ups will be announced in the next five minutes or so, so here’s a reminder of the early team news for the visitors… Liverpool will be without Giovanni Leoni for the rest of the season after he tore his ACL, leaving Arne Slot with just three senior centre backs. Ibrahima Konate has been shaky as of late and may be dropped for Joe Gomez, while Hugo Ekitike is available after missing Saturday’s loss through suspension. Federico Chiesa has not travelled with the squad due to injury. Chris Wilson30 September 2025 18:40 Slot: ‘You have to give your all’ “Win, lose or draw – if you want to compete for trophies and wear a Liverpool shirt, you have to give your all and play good football,” said Arne Slot in his pre-match conference when asked about the reaction to the defeat to Palace. “We conceded so many chances against Palace, so we can improve and those things I will show to the players. “”We play to score goals and win games. As long as Liverpool have existed, they have more possession than other teams. Sometimes teams are happy to defend because they are very strong. Teams are managed so well and are so fit, it is getting harder and harder to play through, so we brought in good attackers who can help unlock those road blocks. “We have conceded four goals from set-pieces. We have changed full-backs but we have [also] changed a bit more. The goals we conceded – I will look back in detail -but the first thing that comes to my mind is not that the new full-backs are the problem.” Chris Wilson30 September 2025 18:30 Jurgen Klopp provides honest verdict on whether he’ll ever return to coaching Jurgen Klopp has provided an update on whether he will ever go back into coaching, 16 months on from his emotional departure from Liverpool. Article continues after advertisement The incident in the 51st minute of the preliminary final saw Predebon placed on report and subsequently hit with a Grade 1 offence. Meanwhile, Kiwi Ferns skipper Georgia Hale is free to play in the opening Pacific Championships match against Samoa after accepting a fine for a crusher tackle. Hale and Titans team-mate Shaylee Bent were charged following their side’s finals elimination by the Knights. The 2023 Golden Boot winner was hit with a Grade 1 Crusher Tackle on Newcastle’s Grace Giampino in the 28th minute of the semi-final at McDonald Jones Stadium. Marc Marquez says MotoGP title was ‘an impossible dream’

Marquez broke his arm at the start of the 2020 season, which over the course of two years required four operations. In 2021, a motocross crash resulted in severe concussion. The following year, double vision meant he had to miss many races, and in 2023 he broke his ankle, ribs and fingers. He admits he was close to leaving the sport and – like most observers – did not see a seventh title coming. But Marquez has been reborn since joining Ducati for the 2024 season. Last year he won three races on the way to finishing third overall, and this year he has been dominant, winning 11 times to take the title, with his brother Alex in second place. “This title was the most difficult challenge of my career. It was impossible to believe that I could win again,” he said. “In 2023 and 2022, I was considering stopping my career. Now the next target will be 2026, trying to fight for another championship. “But for me, the biggest challenge is already done. “That was to come back from that very bad period of injuries from 2020 to 2024 and now in 2025 close that circle with our world championship.”

Read more Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal’s key players are committing their futures to the club because they can fulfil their ambitions to win trophies in north London. William Saliba has become the latest Gunners star to sign a new long-term deal, despite interest from Real Madrid. The France defender’s previous contract had been due expire in 2027 and the PA news agency understands he has now extended his stay to 2030. “It’s big news, I’m very happy and it’s congratulations to William,” said Gunners boss Arteta. “He fully deserves his new contract, he has been phenomenal over the last few years and we are very happy to keep the spine of the team with us. “First of all it shows that they belong to this club and that they share the same ambition as the club and want to continue their careers here.” Saliba moved to Arsenal from St Etienne in July 2019, initially spending time back on loan in France, and has made 140 appearances in all competitions. He has now joined fellow centre-half Gabriel Magalhaes and highly-rated youngsters Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly in signing new contracts this year. The 24-year-old said: “I’m so happy to sign the new deal with my club. I have to keep going like this to try and win some trophies. “I think the only thing we miss here is to win trophies. We have a good squad, good staff and a good coach so we are close to achieving things. “I was not focused on clubs from outside, just here. I want to stay here and I am focused on my club.” After starting their Champions League campaign with a victory over Athletic Bilbao, Arsenal take on Greek champions Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. It will be their first home Champions League tie since the semi-final defeat by eventual winners Paris St Germain in April. Captain Martin Odegaard is fit to start after missing the draw against Manchester City with a shoulder injury. The midfielder came off the bench at Newcastle on Sunday and helped turn the game around as the Gunners claimed a dramatic 2-1 win. “He was very good and immediately you could see the desire and responsibility to change things and he helped us win the game,” added Arteta. “After the match there was great energy, everyone was celebrating because of the manner it happened, but we have to move on very quickly. “We have the same ambition to go game by game and try to be better than the opponent. We have a very difficult one tomorrow.”
Four changes to Springbok team

Rassie Erasmus has again opted for continuity in his Springbok team selection, with Ox Nche returning to the starting team, while Grant Williams, Jesse Kriel and Bongi Mbonambi have been named on the bench. Nche was a late withdrawal last week in Durban after he pulled up with a niggle, but the loosehead prop is back and will pack down in the front row with Malcolm Marx and Thomas du Toit. Meanwhile, the three new players on the replacements bench – which again feature a split of five forwards and three backs – are Williams at scrumhalf, Mbonambi at hooker, and Kriel as a utility back. The rest of the squad remain unchanged, with Eben Etzebeth starting at lock alongside Ruan Nortje in what will mark his 138th Test, with captain Siya Kolisi, who will earn his 98th cap, partnering up with Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jasper Wiese in the loose trio. In the backline, Cobus Reinach and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu are again the starting halfbacks, while Ethan Hooker and Cheslin Kolbe retain their places on the wing, Damian de Allende and Canan Moodie in the midfield, and Damian Willemse at fullback. On the bench, Mbonambi will form a back-up front row with props Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Wilco Louw, with RG Snyman covering lock and Kwagga Smith loose forward. Williams will provide an impact in the backline with Manie Libbok and Kriel. The match kicks off at 15:00 (SA time) and will be broadcast live on SuperSport. Carlos Alcaraz fury at time violation in Japan Open final win over Taylor Fritz

Read more Carlos Alcaraz won his eighth title of a remarkable season with victory over an ailing Taylor Fritz in the final of the Japan Open. The world number one was playing in a ninth consecutive tournament final, and it appeared he may be handed the win as Fritz struggled with a left thigh injury. But the American rallied from 5-1 down in the second set before Alcaraz, who was furious to be given a time violation in the opening set, clinched a 6-4 6-4 triumph. The French Open and US Open champion hit out at umpire Fergus Murphy for the time violation, saying: “Do you think it’s normal that I finish a long point at the net and then barely have time to go for the balls, with no time to rest? Do you think it’s normal or not? OK, you’ve never played tennis in your life.” Alcaraz was beaten by Fritz at the Laver Cup earlier this month but his only defeat since April in a regular tournament came against Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final. The Spaniard re-established dominance over his big rival by winning the US Open final and has picked straight up where he left off in Asia. Alcaraz’s achievement is all the more impressive because his campaign in Tokyo was almost over before it started when he suffered an ankle injury early in his opening match, but he went on to drop just one set all week. “I enjoyed every single second apart from the five minutes that I hurt my ankle,” the 22-year-old said. “I’m really happy with the level that I played, with everything. First time here in Tokyo, first title, hopefully not the last one. I’m going to enjoy this moment. “My best season so far, without a doubt. I didn’t start the year that good, struggling mentally, struggling emotionally. Looking back and how I came back from that, I’m just really proud of myself.” Sinner is on track to match Alcaraz after beating Alex De Minaur 6-3 4-6 6-2 in the semi-finals of the China Open. The Italian, who revealed he had been struggling with stomach problems, continued his perfect record against Australian De Minaur with an 11th straight win but he was made to fight, saving 11 of the 12 break points he faced and losing a set for only the second time. Sinner, who will play in a ninth consecutive hard-court final and third in a row in Beijing, said: “I felt like the level was very high. “Many great rallies, many great chances for both. I am very happy about today. It was a different match than usual against him, it was a very even match.” Sinner will try to go one better than 12 months ago, when he was beaten by Alcaraz in the final. His opponent will be American teenager Learner Tien, who outlasted a cramping Daniil Medvedev, with the Russian retiring down 5-7 7-5 4-0. Medvedev, who was fined more than £30,000 for his behaviour at the US Open, was again involved in a heated clash with an umpire, this time after he was given a warning early in the third set for not giving his best effort. Medvedev, who could barely move, called the supervisor, saying: “I’m giving my best efforts, I’m telling you. Who are you to decide? Why is every referee in the world trying to intimidate me? After the US Open, I’m trying to be good. This guy is doing that and I’m supposed to act good?” Alcaraz, meanwhile, will head to China to begin preparations for the Shanghai Masters, which begins on Wednesday and features the return to the ATP tour of Novak Djokovic.
Craig Gordon returns Scotland squad for World Cup qualifiers

Craig Gordon has returned to the Scotland squad for the home World Cup qualifiers against Greece and Belarus. The 42-year-old goalkeeper has not played since early May and is yet to feature in a Hearts squad this season as he returns to full fitness after a neck injury. Capped 81 times, Gordon replaces club-mate Zander Clark, with Derby County full-back Max Johnston and Blackburn Rovers central defender Dominic Hyam also dropping out. Scotland have four points after opening with a 0-0 draw in Denmark and a 2-0 victory against Belarus in Hungary. The Greeks visit Hampden Park on 9 October and Belarus are in Glasgow three days later, with both matches live on the BBC. Greece, who beat Belarus then lost to Denmark in Athens, have good memories of their last trip to Hampden. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg of a Nations League play-off in March, the visitors ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in what was Gordon’s most recent international appearance. With head coach Steve Clarke opting for a smaller squad, there is no room for Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, who has hit seven goals so far this season, or Middlesbrough forward Tommy Conway.
