Aberg misses birdie putt

Ludvig Aberg is letting these birdie chances slip away. He needs the putter to get hot but leaves another one left of the hole at the 8th. He could easily be at -11 with the chances he’s had today

McIlroy stays on top

Gorgeous shot by DeChambeau from the sand at the 7th. A clever shot, uses the slope and the ball arcs round, stopping a few feet from the hole. Taps in for par and it’s a top sand-save.

After his tree magic, Rory’s birdie putt is a trickler down the hill. How has he left that short?! I didn’t think that was possible… Still, he’ll take a par after where he was following the tee shot. Another hole ticked off and the three-shot lead remains.

McIlroy sets up birdie chance with glorious shot

Peals of laughter from Rory McIlroy as he comes up with a ludicrous shot! His tee shot at the 7th is off-line, into the trees but he comes up with a gem.

Finds a tiny back between the tree line and the ball flies perfectly before dropping beyond the flag. Suddenly he’s got a brilliant shot at birdie out of nowhere – he’s right to laugh. How did he find that gap?

Scheffler making moves

World No 1 and defending champion Scottie Scheffler is just poking his head up. Back-to-back birdies, and three in four, as he takes advantage of the par-five 8th. He’s at -7, two back of Bryson but still five behind McIlroy. He’ll need a monster final 10 holes to properly contend.

Corey Conners also joins him at -7 with a kick-in birdie after a glorious second shot at the 7th.

McIlroy and DeChambeau hold serve at the 6th

McIlroy will be happy to tick off the holes with this three-shot lead. That’s what he does at the par-three 6th – safe tee shot and solid two putt for par.

DeChambeau has a better look at birdie, but still from 20 feet or so, and the ball is just low of the hole. Also in for par.

Rose nearly produces magic moment

Justin Rose is not a million miles away from an albatross! His second shot at the par-five 8th bounds on the green and so nearly hits the flag, bouncing past the hole instead. It’s a good way past but a nice two putt secures the birdie and he jumps into fourth on his own at -7.

Aberg looks like he’s about to get to -9 and move alongside Dechambeau bu his birdie putt at the 7th lips out. He thought it was in!

Par-par on the 5th

DeChambeau is struggling on the greens here. His birdie attempt at 5 races by the hole and leaves himself a tricky one coming back. Clumsy. Avoids a third straight three-putt by slotting it in though.

McIlroy’s chip from the fringe is decent, to about eight feet or so. Holds his nerve and rolls it in. After all that par-par and nothing changes.

McIlroy in recovery mode on the 5th

McIlroy in tree trouble at the 5th as he screams “FORE RIGHT” off the tee. He’s chipping out of the pine straw, round a tree. 170-odd yards to the pin and he lashes it. Decent contact and it’s in the fringe, next to the greenside bunker.

Good recovery and he might be able to salvage par with an up-and-down, which looked unlikely after his first shot.

DeChambeau finds the fairway from the tee, a nine-iron is nicely struck and he’ll have a good look at birdie.

In other news, Scheffler makes another birdie and climbs to -6…

Aberg closes the gap

Just as I type that, Aberg does board the birdie train. Choo choo! Lovely tee shot at the par-three 6th and strokes in the birdie putt to move to -8. That’s only one shot behind DeChambeau…

The chasing pack holding firm

How are the men behind the final pairing getting on? Ludvig Aberg has been steady since his opening birdie with four straight pars to stay at -7. He needs to get aboard the birdie train sharp-ish if he wants to get close to McIlroy.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose and Jason Day have found birdies to move to -6 alongside Corey Conners.
