More from Jaissle

“It was soft [the penalty]. It was a really soft one, if you give that, then there will be so many penalties in the future. I’m not a fan of that,” continues Jaissle.

“Today the lads were doing amazing. It’s a young squad, unbelievable, but we have some needs. We know that internally, and we keep that also internally.

When asked how many players, he replies: “You can count it on one hand I would say.”

Finally, when asked whether it feels different managing in the Premier League, he adds: “Yes. Because of the crowd here, unbelievable and the quality in the game. You feel that every situation can be decisive. Every change can be decisive and this is something I really enjoy. So I’m looking forward now.”

Jaissle: ‘I’m really, really happy’

“Hard luck, I would say. I’m really, really happy with the performance after such a short amount of time,” says Matthias Jaissle at full-time.

“The guys were fighting till the end, they put their heart on the pitch and this is something we said that’s not negotiable. That’s the standard. And together with the crowd, it was, in general, a really good performance. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the full three points.

“The heads are a little bit down, but they’re also realistic, they know that we had many mini challenges already. There’s a huge transition phase at the moment.

“But we tried already encouraged them that this is another part where we got some challenges to overcome. Someone was throwing some stones on the way. I need to be careful, not to get fined,” he added.

Iraola: ‘We need this energy’

“I don’t think we deserve to lose the game today and I value the effort from the players,” says Andoni Iraola on Sky.

“I haven’t looked at the stats, but I’m sure we will have more chances, more everything.

“I think we were arriving, probably in the first half, we were not finishing anything.

“We were having a lot of balls on the edge and we were trying to overplay a little bit. And we had just to shoot, shoot, even the first ball we got it.

“I think the players coming from the bench gave us energy. I don’t know if they played better, worse, but they gave us energy. And you can feel the way we want to play, everyone is not going to last 90 minutes. So we need this energy from the ones coming from the bench and I think today it happened,” he added.

More from Wissa

“He’s young, he’s got a lot of energy. I’m really happy he’s here,” says Wissa when asked about new manager Jaissle.

“With the new role he’s given me it’s given me a lot of confidence. I’m one of the leaders so I need to back him. Because on the pitch you can’t always here him so I need to make sure the guys are on alert.

“The manager expects me to be a leader and lead the group. He wants me to be winning balls, making sure everyone is going forward, going for the kill, and sometimes just be calm.

“He wants me to keep up the energy. He wants a lot of energy and that’s the role he gave to me and I am very happy,” added the Magpies striker.

Wissa: ‘That’s the mentality we need to have’

“It’s rough, especially 30 seconds before the end of the game, but that’s a huge step for us,” says Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa to Sky.

“That’s the mentality we need to have through the season. The manager came three weeks ago and gave us a lot of information.

“Now we show on the pitch we are ready for the season. We needed this win to make a statement but in the end we draw. We have so much to work on,” he adds.

On the pre-match display for Kevin Keegan, he adds: “What a special club, what a special man, that’s why we gave him a big credit. The fans were unbelievable today. I think we gave them so much back today and that’s what we need to give them all season.

“We know we needed to give the fans something after this period so that’s why we tried to start fast. The fans pushed us until the end.

“It was my best [performance for Newcastle] so far. New manager, new role. I’m so pleased to be here. I hope today I showed I’m really happy,” he added.

Matthias Jaissle calls out ‘really soft’ penalty decision after Newcastle draw with Liverpool

Newcastle’s new manager Mattias Jaissle called Liverpool’s 95th minute penalty during their 2-2 draw ‘really soft’ and said he did not agree with the decision.

Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock scored either side of a Cody Gakpo goal to put Newcastle in a commanding position before Lewis Hall, who had had a wonderful game, brought down Victor Munoz in the box and gave up a penalty to the Reds with mere seconds remaining in the match.

Dominik Szoboslai rattled in the spot kick and secured a point for Liverpool though he believed that his team should have won the game.

‘You don’t win easy in the Premier League’

“If I am honest, we should have won. But that’s football,” continues Szoboszlai.

“You don’t win easy in the Premier League – doesn’t matter who you play against. We have to be aware of that and we need to take care in the next game.

“That we will never give up. I can guarantee you that. We have to fight every time – all day long for 90 minutes.

“Everybody who came off the bench also made an impact as well today. We need the whole squad and we need to be ready,” he added.

Szoboszlai: ‘We need to take the positivity’

“To be honest, I didn’t even hear the referee’s whistle. I had to look at him if I can go. I was practicing a lot during the pre-season. We didn’t have any penalties during games, but in training,” says Dominik Szoboszlai on Sky after full-time.

“We need to take the positivity of the first game and move on. More than 50,000 fans in the stadium against you. You can’t hear your own voice. That’s why I love football and that’s why I am doing it,” he explains.

“To come here is always tough. Everybody knows the [Newcastle] fans are unbelievable. They have a great team and a manager – new but he has proven himself in many other clubs.

“But we were prepared and we needed to be closer to each other under a new manager as well. We needed to know what was going on in the game. It’s a good thing coming back into the game after 2-1 down,” he added.

FULL-TIME! Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool

“Late in the game look a pen is a pen, Lewis Hall is very unlucky and he does catch Víctor Munoz, he tries to anticipate where he’s going to go but he’s too late,” says Micah Richards on Sky.

“He catches his knee and it’s a penalty, it’s knee on knee.”

‘The weaknesses that Liverpool had have not gone away’

“There wasn’t a great deal in it but you can see the weaknesses that Liverpool had last season have not gone away,” says Pat Nevin on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“The defence doesn’t look quite there. I would say Ronald Araujo came on and looked quite impressive. Very, very powerful and very, very strong. He might be a massive part of the answer.

“In terms of pace there is a problem there but going forward they need to be a little bit more creative. You need to get so much more out of Alexander Isak too,” he added.
