It’s easy to get carried away after a win over Sundowns. However, cooler heads have called for Kaizer Chiefs fans to chill.

Opinion pieces call for Kaizer Chiefs fans to not celebrate until they’ve won something

Phakaaathi writer Khaya Ndubane thinks that Chiefs fans ‘need to chill’ amid excitement over their 2-1 Nedbank Cup win over Sundowns. Honestly, we can’t say we disagree with that stance. There’s still a massive hurdle in the way of Chiefs finally ending their long trophy drought. That barrier happens to be Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

As fate would have it, Pirates and Chiefs meet twice in quick succession at the sharp end of the 2024-2205 campaign. First, they do battle in the Betway Premiership on Saturday, 03 May at 15:00. Then, they meet in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday, 10 May. Mfundo Vilakazi will not be available for the Glamour Boys as he’ll be on Afcon U20 duty.

MTN8 qualification is non-negotiable

Silverware isn’t the only thing on Nasreddine Nabi’s to-do list. Failure to qualify for next season’s MTN8 would be a disaster for the club, and it’s not a foregone conclusion by any means. With the news of Royal AM’s expulsion from the PSL, all points collected against them have become null and void. As a result, the revised table sees Chiefs sit on 29 points after 23 games. Previously, they were on 30 points after 24 outings. Points mean more than games in hand at this stage of a campaign. Chippa and Golden Arrows both pose a serious threat to their ambitions of a top-eight finish; the Chilli Boys are now level on points with the Glamour Boys and have a game in hand on Nabi’s men. An imminent trip to Chippa on Saturday 19 April at 17:30 could be make or break. Defeat in this clash is unthinkable for Amakhosi fans.

Does a Nedbank Cup win and a place OUTSIDE the top eight constitute a successful season?
