Kaizer Chiefs are pulling out all the stops to sign Mhleli Mabuza, a rising South African star who’s been turning heads in Europe. Currently playing for Louletano Desportos Clube in Portugal, Mabuza has emerged as a top target ahead of the July transfer window.

The former KZN Academy full-back didn’t just impress—he dominated. This season, Mabuza was named the best right back in the Campeonato de Portugal, thanks to a stellar run that included nine assists. His ability to impact games from the backline has put him firmly on the radar of several PSL clubs.

Mabuza: From KZN to top right back

Mabuza’s journey to European recognition began in 2018 when he moved to Portugal after showcasing his potential in friendly matches. Since then, he has grown into a consistent force for Louletano DC. His dynamic playstyle and pinpoint delivery have earned him not only praise but also serious transfer interest.

Kaizer Chiefs are leading the race for his signature, with the player currently back in South Africa, a development that could fast-track negotiations.

Transfer war: Chiefs face competition

While the Soweto giants remain the frontrunners, they’re not alone in the chase. Two KwaZulu-Natal clubs are also reportedly monitoring the 24-year-old, hoping to lure him back to the domestic league. Still, it’s Chiefs who appear to be in pole position.

“Kaizer Chiefs want to sign him, and Mabuza is currently here in South Africa, making direct talks a lot easier. But does he want to come back home? We’ll see. Right now Chiefs are keen, that I can tell you. A deal [is] very possible,” a source told The South African.

Will Mabuza return to light up the PSL?

As Chiefs look to rebuild and strengthen their squad, Mabuza could be the kind of game-changing addition they need. His European experience and attacking flair from the backline offer a unique edge that could transform the Amakhosi defense.

The ball is now in Mabuza’s court. Will he return to dazzle in the PSL, or continue to build his legacy in Europe?
