His £375,000-a-week contract with the Premier League champions expires in the summer.

And his future was the  subject of intense speculation for several months before he announced his exit.

But De Bruyne – widely considered as one of the best midfielders in Prem history – has since revealed details behind his pending departure.

It turns out that the decision was made by the club rather than De Bruyne himself.

The 33-year-old told written media after City’s 2-0 win at Everton that club directors held a brief meeting to tell him his contract would not be renewed.

He said: “There was a little bit of shock. I didn’t have any offer from them through the whole year and the club made a decision.

“Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I have to accept it.

“Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing but I understand that clubs have to make decisions.”

It is understood that manager Pep Guardiola was involved in the decision but not a part of the meeting where De Bruyne was informed.
