Orlando Pirates manager Jose Riveiro refused to sign a three-year contract extension last offseason, opting to decide once this campaign concludes.
That moment is fast approaching, and the Buccaneers are still in the dark about their future with the Spanish tactician.
According to reports, the 49-year-old gaffer is experiencing homesickness after having left his wife and young daughter in Spain. Three years of separation could be Riveiro’s breaking point – six years in Soweto seems far-fetched for the family man.
Riveiro to leave in June?
Orlando Pirates are evidently desperate to hang on to Riveiro, who has collected five domestic trophies since he arrived in 2021; however, the Spanish native seems reluctant.
“There is an offer for the coach to continue for another three years, but he has asked to wait until the end of the season. His main wish is to win the league, and if that happens, he may leave because he misses home,” a source explained.
“The league title may decide the coach’s future. That’s what’s believed as things stand,
“Nothing has been agreed upon because the coach hasn’t made up his mind. He has made it clear that he misses home and family. And will only consider his future at the end of the season. However, the club has already opened talks with his representatives, hoping for the best outcome.”
Orlando Pirates eye Mbhuthuma
Richards Bay striker Yanele Mbhuthuma is on Orlando Pirates’ offseason transfer list: “Yes, the club is planning on bringing in another striker and they have already identified some strikers including [Yanele] Mbhuthuma from Richards Bay and that’s why they want to loan out Radiopane or release him,” another source explained.
“They want to have strikers who will compete among each other for next season and that’s the situation right now.”
