THE Fiji Under-17 girls’ futsal team will feature as the country’s sole representative at the Youth Olympic Futsal Games in Senegal later this year.
This was confirmed by Fiji FA futsal head coach Jose Gerardo, who revealed that the boy’s team would no longer be part of the competition.
Gerardo said the Fiji boys’ side had been replaced by the Solomon Islands, bringing disappointment to the local camp after months of preparation.
“It is heart breaking as we invested a lot in the preparation for the boys’ team,” he said.
Despite the setback, Gerardo highlighted the positive outcome for the girls’ team, who will now carry the nation’s hopes on the international stage.
“It is good that our girls are getting the opportunity, and this is the first time a team from Fiji will be on the world stage to showcase their talents,” he added.
The Fiji U-17 girls’ futsal side is expected to continue preparations as they gear up for the global event, marking a significant milestone for women’s futsal development in the country.
Their participation is seen as a major boost for the growth of the women’s game, providing young players with valuable international exposure.
