It looks like a nice day, however: the sun is shining and temperatures have yet to hit the highs New York summer is infamous for.

While the seeds at the US Open have largely avoided the carnage of the opening round of Wimbledon, there are still some big names to have fallen at the first hurdle in New York.

Emma Raducanu claimed her first victory at the US Open since winning the title in 2021 as she breezed past qualifier Ena Shibahara in just 62 minutes.

After famously winning the US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier four years ago, Raducanu has twice crashed out in the opening round – losing to Alize Cornet in 2022 and Sofia Kenin in 2024.

Jack Draper insists he can still be a contender for the US Open despite concerns over an arm problem.

The world number five arrived in New York without having played a match for more than seven weeks after being diagnosed with bone bruising in his left humerus.

Draper admitted after battling to a four-set win over Federico Agustin Gomez in the first round on Monday that he had feared he would not make it, with the 23-year-old pushing the expected recovery time of eight weeks.

Yesterday’s exodus means only four Brits remain in the draw in New York: Raducanu, Norrie, Fearnley, and Jack Draper.

Norrie plays Francisco Comesana at 11am local time today (4pm BST), with the Argentine world No 54 a dangerous opponent, having just knocked out 28th seed Alex Michelsen.

Fearnley and Draper have the day off before facing third seed Alexander Zverev – who has beaten the Scot twice already this year – and Zizou Bergs respectively.

But there was positive news for one Brit as Jacob Fearnley came out on top in his first-round clash with wily veteran Roberto Bautista Agut.

Fearnley overcame nerves and struggles on his serve to defeat the experienced Spaniard and record his first main draw win at the US Open, 7-5 6-2 5-7 6-4.

The 24-year-old was loudly backed by a member of the crowd behind the baseline, who then switched allegiances when Bautista Agut won the third set.

“When I Iost the service game at 5-4 in the third he completely turned – I couldn’t believe it,” explained Fearnley, who won in three hours and 24 minutes.

“I wanted to say something. He switched quick. It wasn’t abuse, just confusing and extremely loud. He didn’t say a nice thing after that.”

Katie Boulter vowed to address problems with her serve after her struggles continued with an opening-round loss at the US Open.

The former British number one will drop outside the world’s top 50 after a 6-4 6-4 defeat by 27th seed Marta Kostyuk.

Boulter has had a difficult season and admitted ahead of the match that she had begun to feel burnt out after heading straight from Wimbledon to the United States.

The 29-year-old is now in a much more positive place mentally but another eight double faults, often at important moments, contributed to the defeat, and Boulter is ready to go back to the drawing board.

There was an exodus of Brits yesterday as Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, Billy Harris and Francesca Jones all fell on day four.

Kartal was making her debut in the main draw in New York following her speedy rise up the rankings and was looking to write more grand slam headlines following a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon.

She beat Haddad Maia earlier this season in Indian Wells but, inspired by her noisy Brazilian fan club, the 18th seed overcame cramp to claim a 6-3 1-6 6-1 victory.

While Boulter, who has had a difficult season, will drop outside the world’s top 50 after also losing in the opening round.

She lost out 6-4 6-4 to 27th seed Marta Kostyuk in a fairly close contest, saving five match points on her own serve before her Ukrainian opponent came back from 0-40 down in her own service game to win.
