Volavola excited to link up with fellow Fijians – FBC News

Ben Volavola. [Photo: Queensland Reds] Ben Volavola says he’s excited to link up with his fellow Fijians in the Queensland Reds squad next season but admits the biggest drawcard in his move to Brisbane was the “aura” of head coach Les Kiss. The Fiji international was unveiled early last month as one of the Reds’ key signings for the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, adding more experience to a fly-half group that already includes Carter Gordon, Tom Lynagh and Australia A representative Harry McLaughlin Phillips. Volavola returns to Super Rugby after his stint with Leicester Tigers in England, covering fly-half, fullback and centre. Article continues after advertisement The 38-Test Flying Fijian featured at the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups and remains eligible for Fiji for now. If he is not capped before August 2026, the 34-year-old will become eligible for Wallabies selection. With more than 200 professional matches behind him, Volavola joins a powerful Reds squad featuring Wallabies flanker Fraser McReight, former All Black Jeffrey Toomaga Allen and World Rugby Dream Team No 8 Harry Wilson. Volavola says he has kept a close eye on the Reds’ progression. “I tried to keep up to date with highlights over in Europe and just watching the Super Rugby competition that way. The Reds have always been near the top among the Australian teams and they’ve given the New Zealand sides a handful of problems as well. They play an exciting attacking game with a smart kicking plan built into their attack. They play outside the box, they’ve got an attack first mindset and that’s the style I love. When I first heard the Reds were a real possibility, that style was one of the most exciting parts.” The Reds finished the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season in fifth place before falling 32 12 to the Crusaders in the Qualifying Final, their fourth straight quarterfinal exit even after a promising 2024 campaign in which they pushed the Chiefs. Kiss will lead the Reds for one more season before succeeding Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach after the July Test window and the start of the new Nations Championship. Volavola says Kiss’ presence played a major part in his decision. “Just from his aura, he’s very inviting and very easy to get along with. That helps us express ourselves the way we want and only complements the entire squad.” Volavola returns to Super Rugby with his fourth club, having debuted for the NSW Waratahs in 2013 before later stints with the Crusaders and Melbourne Rebels. WNBA offers $1M max base salary plus revenue sharing – FBC News

[Source: Reuters] The latest proposal made by the WNBA in collective bargaining negotiations with the players’ union would guarantee a $1 million base in salary for players on max deals, ESPN reported. The total earnings for max players could exceed $1.2 million when factoring in revenue sharing, which would surpass the league’s previous proposal that had max salaries around $1.1 million between salary and a revenue-sharing piece. The Women’s National Basketball Players Association rejected that proposal roughly two weeks ago, and the league and union agreed Sunday to extend their deadline six weeks till Jan. 9, 2026. It was the second extension since the end of the 2025 season. Article continues after advertisement Per ESPN, the newest proposal would lead to a $5 million salary cap in 2026, and it would grow annually along with revenue growth throughout the length of the CBA. The minimum salary for 2026 would be $225,000. Team salary caps were $1.5 million in 2025. The players’ side has been asking for a cap that was tied to league revenue growth rather than staying flat throughout the length of the deal. The union has not yet responded publicly to the league’s latest proposal. Stream the best of Fiji on VITI+. Anytime. Anywhere.

Solomon Islands teams add spark to Super 7s – FBC News

The countdown is on for this weekend’s Super Sevens, and tournament director Randall Kamea says preparations are in their final stages. Kamea said only a few administrative checks remain, with the competition set to welcome a mix of seasoned local giants and lesser-known sides aiming to cause an upset. Adding extra intrigue this year is the arrival of three teams from the Solomon Islands (Usotasi, Covenant Brothers, Islanders). Article continues after advertisement Usotasi, coached by former Fiji 7s star William Ryder, is expected to draw plenty of attention, while Covenant Brothers will run out under the guidance of another Fiji great, Jerry Tuwai. Kamea believes the Solomon Islands teams could spring surprises as their preparation has been largely out of sight. This year also marks the debut of the Fiji Sports Council Grassroots 7s team, an outfit many fans are curious to see in action. Kamea said their inclusion adds another layer of unpredictability, noting that most teams in Fiji are naturally competitive in the shorter format. Fiji ready for RWC27 pool reveal – FBC News

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians will discover their pool opponents for the 2027 Rugby World Cup tomorrow when the official tournament draw is held in Sydney. The Flying Fijians are in Band 2 for the draw, placing them among the next tier of contenders and setting the stage for a highly anticipated reveal of their World Cup pathway. Samoa became the final qualifier last month after winning the Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai. The 24 teams have been placed into four bands of six based on the World Rugby Men’s Rankings as of 1 December 2025. Teams will be drawn band by band, starting with Band 4, followed by Band 3, Band 2 and finally Band 1, ensuring each pool consists of one team from each band. The only exception is hosts Australia, who will be automatically placed in Pool A in their respective band and will feature in the opening match in Perth | Boorloo on 1 October 2027. The draw will officially map out Fiji’s road to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, signalling the next major step in the Flying Fijians’ build-up to the tournament. Stream the best of Fiji on VITI+. Anytime.
