BARRY HILLS, one of Britain’s greatest ever racehorse trainers, has died at the age of 88.

Hills trained over 3,200 race winners over a career lasting more than 40 years.

He died on Friday night after a long-illness, having previously overcome throat cancer in 2005 and having his voicebox removed three years later to carry on training.

A British Horseracing Authority statement said: “All of us at the BHA are saddened to learn of the death of Barry Hills and send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.

“Barry’s contribution to racing was immense and he will rightly be remembered as one of the great figures of our sport.”

Based out of in Lambourn, Berkshire, the horse racing icon racked up winners all over the world.

Some of his most notable wins include the 1973 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with Rheingold and the 1992 Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival with Nomadic Way.

He won four out of five of the British Classics, though the Epsom Derby managed to elude him despite efforts with Rheingold, Hawaiian Sound, Glacial Storm and Blue Stag, who all finished second.

Hills had retired in 2011 but came out of retirement after the death of his son, John.

His sons, Michael and Richard both enjoyed successful careers as jockeys.
