WWE star Braun Strowman has received a huge backlash online for suggesting that independent wrestlers who can’t pay their bills should change their jobs.
The spread of coronavirus has decimated the world of sport with hundreds of events either cancelled or postponed to prevent the spread of the deadly bug.
Major wrestling promotions WWE and All Elite Wrestling have been forced to continue programming behind closed doors but smaller independent wrestling companies rely on fan income to make a living.
AEW’s Evil Uno made a public request asking those who had any spare money to try and support those struggling wrestlers if they can.
But former Incontentinal Champion Braun Strowman – real name Adam Scherr – drew serious ire for his response.
In a since-deleted post on Instagram, he wrote: “Here we go with more of the somebody pay for my bills stuff. If you can’t afford to pay your bills maybe you should change professions.
“That’s why I quit strongman. I loved it, but I couldn’t afford to live so instead of making a GoFundMe or a Patreon wanting someone else to take care of me I went out and worked harder than I ever have in my life to get to where I am.
“What happened to being accountable for your own actions????!!!”
Braun’s comments understandably garnered him huge heat online, especially since they followed former WWE star Dean Ambrose – now AEW’s Jon Moxley – donating over £900 to Irish promotion Over The Top Wrestling.
One fan wrote: “Jon Moxley: donating to independent wrestlers anonymously
“Braun Strowman: publicly calling out independent wrestlers and telling them not to be poor.
“Be a Jon Moxley, not a Braun Strowman.”
Another said: “Congrats to Braun Strowman for winning the worst Instagram post of 2020 award.”
A third added: “Braun Strowman just salty cus the company he works for doesn’t trust him with the big belt.”
