Yankowski surprised with women footballers

The Digicel National Women team is currently in camp with 28 players at Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa preparing for the OFC Nations Cup to be staged in July next year.

Newly appointed Fiji FA Technical Director Timo Jankowski is in charge of the team after the departure of former coach Marika Rodu.

Jankowski is impressed with the players’ spirit in the team.

“I am really impressed with the team spirit amongst the girls. This week is our second week of training and I am really happy with the progress shown by them,” said Yankowski

“The first week has been really good even better than we thought because it was quite difficult to estimate the level of the girls after this long break.

“I am happy that we have had eight training sessions last week and we don’t have any injuries which show the players are progressing well despite of long break,”

The German national said the team had adopted his coaching style well.

“I would say it is a little bit different but the method I am using is a very proven method which helps the players to develop their abilities and that will result in a better team,” Yankowski said

The UEFA A-license coach was surprised to see the potential in women footballers.

“I am really surprised, for me there are some players with top potential and it is really nice to work with them as they are learning very quickly,” added Yankowski

Digicel national men’s football team coach Flemings Serristlev will be assisting Yankowski this week before the team takes a break for the resumption of Digicel Women’s Super League this weekend.
