Liverpool secured 3 points to beat Southampton 1-2 away from home to go one point behind Manchester City which kept the title race alive.
Southampton went ahead through Nathan Redmond inside 13 minutes after his shot curling into the top corner deflected off James Milner. Jurgen Klopp made nine changes from Saturday’s victory in the FA Cup final after going through 120 minutes of Football and penalties, Liverpool thought they had conjured the perfect response in the 17th minute when Roberto Firmino nodded home a free-kick, but the offside flag was soon raised over on the far side. Liverpool would find their equaliser before the half-hour though, with Diogo Jota controlling Joe Gomez’s cross and slipping the ball to Minamino to lash home against his former club.
Firmino had two opportunities to put his side into the lead before the halftime whistle, first opting to pass when he should have shot from close range and then stinging the returning Alex McCarthy’s gloves from considerably further out. Liverpool lost Joe Gomez to injury at the break and with no Trent Alexander-Arnold in the squad, he was replaced by captain Jordan Henderson, this would make James Milner play at right back for the remainder of the match.
The Saints showed little inclination to break out from their 5-4-1 shape in the second half as Liverpool peppered their goalmouth with shots and crosses without finding the breakthrough which made it challenging for the reds to score from open play. The winner comes from a corner after relentless Liverpool pressure and sees Joel Matip scoring the winner after deflecting massively off of Walker-Peters and into the back of the net.
It means the title race will now be decided on Sunday at a 4pm Kickoff, with Liverpool hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield and City welcoming Aston Villa to the Etihad. Liverpool have won the Carabao Cup already in addition to the FA Cup and will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Paris later this month.
