Soucek’s late own goal means Hammers must wait for knockout qualification despite Benrahma double

WEST HAM maintained their unbeaten record in the Europa League but dropped their first points of the competition with a 2-2 draw against Genk.

The hosts took the lead after just four minutes when a superb through ball from Japanese international Junya Ito found Ghanaian Joseph Paintsil who burst onto it and fired into the bottom corner.

Genk’s early goal is the first West Ham have conceded in the Europa League this season after three successive clean sheets.

But they hit back shortly before the hour mark when Vladimir Coufal was found by Manuel Lanzini and the Czech full-back slid the ball across for Benrahma to tuck home.

Hammers centre-back Craig Dawson then went inches away from bagging a winner 17 minutes from time, only for his downward header to drift narrowly wide of the post.

But the visitors eventually found a way through in the 82nd minute when the twinkling feet of Benrahma danced into the box before he slotted the ball beyond Maarten Vandevoordt.

West Ham thought they had won it, only for Tomas Soucek to loop a terribly unfortunate header beyond Alphonse Areola and hand Genk a point.

David Moyes’ side remain top of their Europa League group but have not yet qualified for the knockout stages.

More to follow.
