Did Sadio Mane help his childhood friend get a contract at Bayern Munich? Shock as Desire Segbe Azankpo goes from being ‘one of Oldham’s worst strikers in memory’ to joining his good pal at German giants
- Former Oldham striker Desire Segbe has completed his move to Bayern Munich
- He is a good friend of Sadio Mane after coming through a youth team together
- During his team with Oldham, Segbe scored four goals in 28 appearances
- It’s been reported Bayern signed him to help Mane get settled in Germany
Segbe took to Instagram on Sunday to confirm his move to the Bundesliga champions on a two-year deal.
As reported by Ghanian journalist Saddick Adams, the 29-year-old is a long-time friend of Sadio Mane having come through the Generation Foot Academy together in Senegal.
Mane left his home country in 2011 to join Metz in France and he requested to be accompanied by Segbe, who would go on to join the club’s B team.
The pair then got separated when Mane joined RB Salzburg and Segbe picked up a serious injury which halted his career.

Meanwhile, close friend Sadio Mane left Liverpool to join Bundesliga side earlier this summer
Segbe went on to play for a number of clubs across France, Russia and Holland over the course of nine years.
During the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Segbe’s Benin came up against Mane’s Senegal. Benin exited the tournament early but Segbe waited for the former Liverpool forward and they travelled together to England before he joined Oldham for the 2019-2020 season.
While Mane was on the hunt to win the Premier League title with Liverpool, he struggled in League two – scoring four goals in 28 appearances.

Despite their contrasting success in football, Mane and Segbe stayed in touch for many years. In an interview with Lookcharms earlier this year, the latter explained: ‘He (Mane) always had big ambitions. He always wanted to go as high as possible. He comes from a poor background, like all of us.
‘And we say to ourselves that we have to succeed in order to help the family, to take over, because there are people behind who are hungry.
‘Sadio has always dreamed very big. And I remember when he spoke to me about the Senegalese selection… he wanted it so much.’
Mane was accompanied by Segbe when he arrived for his medical this summer. It’s believed Bayern signed him to help Mane settle into his new environment quicker.
The Senegalese forward scored on his debut for the club as they beat RB Leipzig 5-3 in Saturday’s Supercup.
