  • Previous record was held by Gerry Hitchens after scoring 16 goals in 1962
  • Abraham has reinvented himself from the player let go by Chelsea last year

Roma striker Tammy Abraham has broken the Serie A record for most goals scored by an Englishman in a single season after scoring against Torino on Friday.

The former Chelsea striker has been a revelation in Italy, scoring 17 league goals under the watchful gaze of Jose Mourinho – which has launched the club into a European qualification spot.

The 24-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge last year before joining Roma on a five-year-deal – a decision which may come back to bite the Blues.

Abraham bagged two goals against Torino on Friday night which helped seal a spot in Europe for next season ahead of their Europa Conference League final.

Both Abraham goals came following huge mistakes in the Torino defence with the opener in the 33rd minute after the home side gave the ball away in its own half.

Lorenzo Pellegrini found Abraham, who turned Torino defender David Zima inside out before riding a tackle and firing into the bottom right corner.

Abraham doubled his tally after Etrit Berisha tripped the Roma striker – before he struck the resulting penalty coolly down the middle three minutes before halftime.

The Cobham graduate broke the previous record which had belonged to Gerry Hitchens, who scored 16 for Inter Milan back in 1962.

Abraham’s former Chelsea teammate Reece James was quick to show support for the 24-year-old in the form of a Tweet.

The Chelsea full-back wrote: ‘History made. Most goals by an Englishman in a single Serie A season @tammyabraham.’

James and Abraham graduated through the Chelsea academy together and spent two seasons together in the first team at Stamford Bridge.
