Alex Telles celebrates his stunning volley

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping his Manchester United side can overturn recent poor form with Villarreal the visitors to Old Trafford in Champions League action.

The pair meet in a rematch of the Europa League final in May, a fixture decided by an elongated penalty shootout that eventually fell the Spanish club’s way after Geronimo Rulli kept out opposite number David De Gea’s spot kick. Manchester United began their Champions League campaign with a surprise defeat to Young Boys in Switzerland, a fixture in which Aaron Wan-Bissaka was dismissed.

After back-to-back home defeats to West Ham and Aston Villa, Solskjaer can ill-afford another slip up in front of a crowd that will demand success after a summer of investment. Unai Emery has established himself as something of a Europa League specialist but will bring a well-organised Villarreal team to Manchester.

The 2006 Champions League semi-finalists kept Real Madrid at bay on Saturday to secure a 0-0 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu. Their first Group F fixture was an entertaining affair against Atalanta that finished 2-2, though the Spanish side had their own man sent off in the fixture, with substitute Francis Coquelin twice cautioned soon after joining affairs and thus also suspended for this game.

Man Utd 1 – 1 Villarreal

90+3 mins: Chance! Ronaldo whips a cross in from the right wing as Jesse Lingard runs through the middle of the box. Lingard meets the cross and turns the ball towards goal only for Rulli to leap across and parry it wide of the post!

90+2 mins: Chance! Bruno Fernandes floats a free kick into the box and the initial header is won by Foyth, I think. His header comes to McTominay on the edge of the box and the midfielder volleys a shot at goal but Rulli keeps it out.

Man Utd 1 – 1 Villarreal

87 mins: Moi Gomez shoots from the left side of the box and forces De Gea into a diving save. He parries the ball into the path of Dia but reacts well to stop the second attempt whilst sprawled on the ground. Dia has another chance to score but this time Telles dives in front of the shot and blocks it behind for a corner! Last ditch defending from Manchester United!

Man Utd 1 – 1 Villarreal

84 mins: Here comes Jesse Lingard. Can he tip this match Manchester United’s way? Villarreal look comfortable on the ball. They’re content with keeping possession not looking to overstretch themselves hunting down a winning goal.

Fred is getting ready to come on as well but there hasn’t been a chance to make the changes yet. Lingard is still waiting to come on.

Man Utd 1 – 1 Villarreal

81 mins: Chance! Big, big chance for Cavani to be a hero. Diogo Dalot gets into space on the right and sends it down the line to Mason Greenwood. He whips a cross deep into the box and the ball drops over Aissa Mandi and lands on Cavani’s head. He’s not expecting the defender to miss the ball and it hits him and goes wide of the near post!

Man Utd 1 – 1 Villarreal

75 mins: Aissa Mandi, Moi Gomez and Ruben Pena all come on for Villarreal with Raul Albiol, Alberto Moreno and Yeremy Pino taken off. 15 minutes to play at Old Trafford, will someone claim a winner?

Solskjaer does respond to the substitutions with two of his own. Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho are taken off with Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani brought on. Cavani gets a huge cheer from the Man Utd fans.

Man Utd 1 – 1 Villarreal

72 mins: Save! Sancho brings the ball inside from the left before curling a pass out to Greenwood. He weaves into the box, checks to his left and hits one at goal forcing Rulli into a low save.

Unai Emery is preparing even more changes. No sign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doing the same.
