The Gunners had an initial £30million bid rejected by the defender’s club Ajax but have returned with an offer of £34m plus add-ons up to £38m.
Ajax though are holding out for around £43m knowing that the Argentine international is also fancied by Manchester United.

Martinez has expressed the fact he is happy with the Dutch champions and is very popular with teammates and supporters alike in Amsterdam.
He has been content to keep a low profile out of respect to the club and fans but is understood to be following the interest in him intently.
The 24-year-old would be open to the opportunity to play in the Premier League and would be determined to take his chance if the clubs can agree a fee.
