IF you’d have said last October that Pinatubo would be the long odds-on favourite for a Classic on the first Saturday in June, you’d have been a tad surprised.
Today of course is traditionally Derby day, but in this unique year it’s the 2000 Guineas that takes centre stage this afternoon.
It’s a pity that there aren’t any French runners – but otherwise it is a mouthwatering renewal of the big race.
Pinatubo puts his unbeaten record in the line and, unless he has lost a leg over the winter, he will surely take the world of beating.
But this is racing and there is no such thing as a certainty. Having said that, you can always set your watch by the traditional pre-Guineas gallops rumours coming out of Ballydoyle.
This year, it was a new one for the collection with the news that a drone could not keep up with Arizona during his work. Absolute rocket.
Aidan O’Brien also saddles Wichita, with the Frankie Dettori set to ride. The last time they teamed up in such high-profile fashion, it was with Camelot in the Arc – fair to say it didn’t go down well with Sheikh Mo as Frankie was given the tin-tack soon after!
Kameko, Kinross and Military March add further depth to a proper race – there are some real stars of the future in here.
But perhaps none will shine as bright at Pinatubo.
Follow all the action right here throughout the afternoon – we will have all the latest tips and reaction with our own unique take on proceedings!
