Labasa makes impact return |

The Labasa Women’s football team registered two wins last weekend in the Digicel Women’s Super League competition after returning to football after seven months.

The Sanaila Bera-coached side won 4-2 against Nadroga last Friday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka and defeated Tailevu Naitasiri with the same goal margin on Sunday at Fiji FA Academy ground in Vatuwaqa.

Labasa is in the second spot on the Digicel Women’s Super League points table with 15 points.

Coach Sanaila Bera praised his players for gallant performance in two matches.

“It was tough for the girls to play two matches after seven months of the break but I am happy they really played well, “said Bera

“There are some new players in the team and I am happy we are returning back with six points,”

Bera said there was more work to be done with the team before the next game.

“We really need to work on the fitness level of players and we will have to work more on defense as we have conceded four goals this weekend,” said former Labasa rep

“It was a good learning point for us as I have seen and will analyse our games and come out more prepared in our remaining matches,”

Sonia Alfred scored the opener for Labasa in the 39th minute while Tabua Likumotovai found the equaliser in the 51st minute. Vani Bainivalu in the 62nd minute gave Tailevu Naitasiri the lead but it was cut short by Jotivini Tabua two minutes later.

In the 85th minute, Sindhika Sayal brought Labasa into a 3-2 lead and the final goal was scored by Sofi Diyalowai in the 89th minute.

Tailevu Naitasiri coach Elvis Goundar despite the loss said was happy with the girl’s performance.

“Hats to my girls, they really played well but they lost concentration and focus in the game which cost us.
