The Digicel national futsal and Fiji FA President’s Five futsal are ready for the OFC Futsal Cup tournament which kicks off today at Vodafone Arena in Suva.
Head coach Jerry Sam says the players are excited about the opener.
“We had five weeks of training camp which was intense and tactical training for the players and the players are now excited to play in the championship,” said Sam.
The former Solomon Island futsal coach said the morale was high in the camp.
“The morale is good but there are one or two players caring injuries after playing a few friendly matches but I would say both teams are spirited and await for the tournament to start,”
“We are ready and prepared well for the championship and the boys are looking forward to it,”
Sam said they were fortunate to have two teams in the competition.
“Basically we have two teams and the second team is mainly the development team for the Fiji futsal and I think it’s good to have this bunch of players to be part of the competition because they need exposure and game time as well,”
“They are very young players and they will get experience and exposure in playing in the tough competition which is bright for the future national futsal team,”
“For Digicel national futsal team we have a balanced team and we have prepared within the five weeks and I can see the boys have really coped with the tactical aspect of the game,”
The Digicel national futsal team plays New Caledonia in its opening match today at 8.30 pm.
Sam says it is going to be a tough match against New Caledonia but expects a positive result.
“It is going to be a tough game and this tournament will be tough as well but I think it is good for us after all the destruction by the Covid 19 last two years and it is good to be part of the OFC Cup 2022 and to prepare for the qualification next year,” said Sam
“We are not taking New Caledonia easily as we know they have also prepared well for the tournament but I have faith in my players that they will deliver their best,”
The Fiji FA President’s Five opens the tournament against New Zealand at 1 pm today while the Digicel national futsal side will face New Caledonia at 8.30 pm.
