Digicel national futsal side has been drawn in Group B of the OFC Futsal Cup 2022 development tournament with champions Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, and Samoa while Fiji FA President’s Five is drawn with New Zealand, Tonga, and Vanuatu.
Fiji has host has two teams.
The championship will be played September 13-18 at Vodafone Arena in Suva.
The group stages will be played in a single round-robin where each team plays one match against the other teams in the same group, with three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat.
The group winners and runners-up will contest a semi-final each on Saturday, September 17, with the winners advancing to the Futsal Cup final on Sunday.
Eight teams are taking part from Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu, while OFC invited the Fiji Football Association (FFA) to enter a second team to participate.
Fiji FA futsal head coach Jerry Sam said it’s an exciting opportunity as the host nation for the growth of futsal.
“In Fiji, there’s been a boost of popularity in futsal after the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Sam said.
“We’ve entered two teams into this competition which presents a big opportunity for the next generation of players coming through to be amongst and against those with more experience.”
