Denmark 1-0 Finland: Pernille Harder’s header gave Denmark their first win over a steadfast Finland

Denmark 1-0 Finland: Pernille Harder’s 72nd minute header gave Denmark their first win over a steadfast Finland to keep alive their chances of a quarterfinal place… although they may need a result against Spain to progress

  • The goal came on 72 minutes after a frustrating Finnish defensive performance
  • Finland managed to keep the Danes out in the first half despite heavy pressure
  • But Pernille Harder was alive at the back post to poke home a near post flick on
  • Denmark will likely still need a result against Spain in their final group game

Denmark’s EURO 2022 campaign finally got under way thanks to Pernille Harder’s back post header on 72 minutes against a Finland side that had kept them quiet for the majority of the game.

Having kept the much more fancied Denmark out in the first half, Anna Signeul’s Finland then switched to a back five for the start of the second period, content to take a draw after a 4-1 mauling by Spain in their group opener.

But Denmark had different plans, and a pair of double changes from manager Lars Sondergaard Harder sparked the Danes into life and Harder’s goal was a well-deserved reward for a dominant, if somewhat wasteful, performance.

However, Sondergaard’s side will likely need a result against Spain in their final group game if they are to have a chance of progression, whilst Finland will exit the tournament should Spain lose to the Germans on Tuesday night.
