- Fans soon realise to their relief that they actually mean the US interior secretary
- Erling Haaland is currently in the US with Manchester City on their summer tour
Manchester City fans were thrown into a panic on Monday when the Washington Post tweeted that Haaland had broken a fibula.
The American newspaper inadvertently briefly caused havoc among Manchester City supporters with the tweet before the fans realised that the publication, owned by Jeff Bezos, in fact meant the US interior secretary Debra Haaland.
‘It is unclear the severity of Haaland’s injury, where on the fibula the break occurred, or how long it may take for it to heal,’ the paper tweeted. Choosing to exclude the politician’s first name was the inadvertent mistake that likely caused many City fans to take a sharp intake of breath.
The Washington Post caused havoc among Manchester City fans over the Haaland tweet
Supporters on social media responded to the paper’s post, with some admitting that they thought it was their new £51m superstar striker Erling Haaland.
It appeared to also take the intervention of supporters to let their fellow fans know that the Washington Post did not in fact mean the Norwegian forward,
Responding to the tweet, one supporter wrote: ‘I thought you were talking about Erling Haaland for a second.’
While another instructed the Washington Post to use full names in their tweets in future to avoid such confusion. ‘On the bright side, it’s not Erling Haaland. Must use full names in these headlines. Pep was probably freaking,’ they wrote.
It soon became clear, however, that the publication in fact meant Debra Haaland – a US politician
‘You really got me hahaha,’ another fan laughed.
Rival fans appeared to take great delight in trying to frighten City fans.
‘Retweet to give a Man City fan heart palpitations,’ a supporter joked.
‘EXCLUSIVE: Haaland has broken their fibula, meaning that they will not be playing for Manchester City for the first half of the Season, via [the] Washington Post,’ another fan joked.
Another wrote: ‘Thoughts, Manchester City fans?’
Haaland (C) was signed to much fanfare earlier this summer after City beat off stiff competition
One fan, however, appeared baffled by the confusion. ‘I don’t understand why so many people are mentioning City in this,’ they wrote.
Meanwhile, City, with a fully fit Haaland in tow, arrived in the United States ahead of their summer tour two days ago.
The forward, who was brought in from Borussia Dortmund this summer for a fee amounting to around £51m, will hope to be the missing piece in the jigsaw between City and the so-far elusive Champions League trophy.
