And his flick-on was met by a diving Chalobah at the back post to head the Blues in front inside the opening ten minutes.

It is Chalobah’s second league goal of the season in just three league starts – and he is now the Blues’ joint-top scorer at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League this season.

Tuchel has placed a lot of faith in the youngster this season following a loan spell at Lorient last term.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has also started to play his way into Tuchel’s plans and enjoyed his first league start of the season against Southampton.

The midfielder – another who has gone out on loan multiple times – impressed coming off the bench against Juventus in mid-week.

And he was central to the Chelsea attack against Saints, hitting a volley narrowly wide with his team already 1-0 up.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was another representative of the Chelsea academy to start against Southampton, and he provided a perfect cross for Timo Werner to head in just before half-time – only for the goal to be disallowed.

Supporters were delighted to see academy graduates producing for the first-team, and waxed lyrical about the trio.

One fan wrote on Twitter: Hudson-Odoi, Chalobah and Loftus-Cheek are absolutely in top form today.

Another added: “Chalobah starts for most PL clubs. He’s truly the definition of generational, top player.”

A third said: “A goal made in Cobham.”
