HAVE Arsenal made the right call in handing new deals to David Luiz, Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari?
Mikel Arteta has decided to give haphazard Luiz a new one-year contract despite his defensive horror show against Man City.
The Brazilian was responsible for two goals and got sent off in the 3-0 hammering.
Fellow centre-back Mari will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
And Soares, who was on loan from Southampton, is yet to feature for the Gunners but like Mari signed a four-year deal.
Here, SunSport looks at the top flight stats to see how Luiz compares with two other big-name Premier League centre-backs as well as the best in each category…
Errors leading to goals
The bad news for Luiz – who recently let cameras inside his stunning home – is that he is among the best in only two defensive stats.
Ex-Chelsea star Luiz, 33, is one of the top players for blocks with 28 this season – 11 fewer than Burnley’s James Tarkowski.
But only Southampton’s Jan Bednarek has made more errors leading to a goal.
He has made three, Luiz two.
By comparison, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has made none, likewise Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
Luiz vs Maguire and Van Dijk
Luiz proves a far more effective blocker of shots than either of his rivals.
Maguire (15) and Van Dijk (11) lag way behind Luiz’s effectiveness in throwing himself in the way.
But they far surpass him in other areas.
Maguire and Van Dijk have made 138 and 137 clearances respectively, while Luiz has managed only 100.
The Old Trafford skipper – nicknamed Slab Head – has made 84 headed clearances and Van Dijk 67 – that’s some five more than Luiz.
Maguire and Luiz are level on four yellow cards each but VVD has been given only one this season.
Moreover, Luiz has been sent off twice – Maguire and Van Dijk not once.
Good, but not that good
The truth is, even in the areas where Luiz does do well, he is not near those who do it best.
In fact, the ONLY time Luiz appears in the top 10 of any Premier League defensive statistic is the one for most errors leading to goals!

It is no surprise that some Arsenal fans were raging when news of his deal was announced.
One supporter tweeted: “My day is ruined and I woke up no more than 30 minutes ago.”
Another posted a meme, which read: “Man who thought he’d lost all hope loses last additional bit of hope he didn’t even know he still had.”
