Arsenal icon Wright fumes at England squad and names five players who should have made cut ahead of ‘guaranteed’ players

ARSENAL and England legend Ian Wright has blasted Gareth Southgate’s England squad selection ‘where form is ignored and certain players are guaranteed spots’.

Southgate named his Three Lions squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino on Thursday.

And despite Manchester United duo Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho being dropped for poor form and lack of game time, Gunners icon Wright still feels there’s some undeserving players in the squad.

AC Milan ace Fikayo Tomori was harshly dropped despite making Southgate’s squad in October.

Other in-form stars such as Jarrod Bowen and Conor Gallagher were also snubbed in favour of players who Southgate is familiar with, regardless of dips in performance.

Wright believes West Ham duo Aaron Cresswell and Bowen should’ve made the cut for November’s fixtures, as well as Tomori, Ben White and Gallagher.

The 58-year-old fumed on Twitter: “I’ve been there where form is ignored and certain players are guaranteed spots!!

“It’s hard to take because there is nothing else you can do. I don’t know what Tomori needs to do [to] get in and get a chance.

“Cresswell, Bowen, White, Gallagher will all be gutted.”

Southgate, however, insists his selection has to have ‘consistency’, which means picking some of the players who were involved in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final.

He said: “It’s always difficult because we’ve got so much competition for places and we had quite a few players missing last time, which means you bring others in. Then you’ve got more decisions to make.

“Also, some young players who are playing well that haven’t quite made the squad.

“So, we’ve kept a reasonable amount of consistency, really, with the groups that they were with in the summer.

“They did so well, we’re only five international games on from that.”

Hammers boss David Moyes thinks Bowen is edging closer to his first England call-up.

The 24-year-old has played a part in six goals for the Hammers this season.

He said on his winger: “Jarrod I believe has been knocking at the door for England but I also realise the quality England have got in wide areas; [Jadon] Sancho, [Mason] Greenwood, [Marcus] Rashford, [Raheem] Sterling.

“The players England have got in those areas is the biggest competition England have got, that part of the field.

“It would be good if we could keep Jarrod going because I always get a big thrill if I can get my players international games. It would be good if we could get Jarrod a cap.”
